I changed my friends rear brake pads and did everything like i always do c-claped the piston in and the caliper still didnt fit back on with the new pads finaly i was able to squeeze it back on but now his brakes stick. the mechanic told him the caliper needed to be change and he thinks i screwed it up and im not sure....so my question is did i brake it putting the brakes on or was it a bad caliper to begin with. also the pad on that side was down to the metal and the other side was only 50% worn

Because they parking brake is usually part of the rear caliper your need to turn the pistons while you press them in. If you don't you will wreck the caliper.

And if they don't fit on without almost forcing it it will seize and ruin the seals in the caliper with the heat. Sorry, Just a tid bit of info. For some still work the old fashion way with a c-clamp. Make sure you read up on the vehicle before starting best way to cover your butt lol. Maybe take a short course sounds like the makings of a good mechanic.
