How do you change the rear brakes on a 2005 Ford Freestar?Use a pair of needle nose pliers and you turn the pistons back in to the caliper. If I remember correctly it's clockwise that you turn them. if the dust boot is not in the way you can use some channel locks but be very careful when using the channel locks as you can crack the piston. Then you will be forced to replace the caliper. How do you change the rear brakes on a 2005 Ford Freestar?two way or more to do it i always have used a big screwdriver before removing any bolt or pins and pry on the brake pads a bit.. if it dont move try releasing the bleeder while prying it. if that dont get it go a head and remove it and try a big c clamp... but look inside at piston if there is notches then its a screw type piston and you have to rent a tool to screw it back in it should just push back in.. should be kind of like this

  • How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?

I recently went to a car repair shop and these are the things that they want to do with my car... get new front and rear brakes, new front rotors, service front calipers and rear drums and bleed all system. The mechanic gave me an estimate of $454 including labor and parts. Is that a good deal or does that cost too much? My car is Nissan Altima 1999.How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?Yes you have to change your brake pad as quick as possible before it causes major damage to your metal disc. But the price what he has quoted is expansive. $ 350 should be alright for the good breaking pad including the the labor cost. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?I would ask about the %26quot;service front calipers%26quot; part. Most new calipers are self adjusting and not serviceable. The days of rebuilding calipers are pretty much over with. Unless the caliper is frozen in the slides or leaking there isn't much to %26quot;service%26quot;. As far as the price goes I would say it sounds pretty fair. Probably about 2-2.5 hours of labor plus parts. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?that's not a bad price for a shop to be doing the work, but the price for parts is about half that, the rest is labor. How much does it cost to change brake pads and rotors?Get another quote, but get it done quick or quit driving the car with bad brakes. My rear brake pads doesn't have any wear, why?

From the brake upgrade that I did from last year I notice that my rear brake pads haven't worn at all. My fronts were worn down to the point that I have to change the rotors, but something must be wrong here. How could the fronts wear down so much with the rears not even being touched?

I do notice, however, that the pads only seem to be making contact with certain parts of the rotors. My rear brake pads doesn't have any wear, why?Any time you do brakes on a car, it is easier and safer to change the calipers as well as the brake pads. More than likely the rear caliper piston is not extending as far as needed. My rear brake pads doesn't have any wear, why? When %26quot;you%26quot; replaced your brake pads last year, you probably bled the system incorrectly or somehow caused the %26quot;transfer valve/isolation valve%26quot; to shift, eliminating the rear brakes entirely. The light bulb may be burnt out, but the brake light on the dash should be lit continuously if that happened.

If you have full ABS brakes, there could be sensor or command function problems isolating your rear brakes. My rear brake pads doesn't have any wear, why?If they are drum brakes they need to be adjusted, if they are rotors the piston may be frozen and you will need to replace it. 95 240sx s14 rear brake caliper piston problem?

I am in the process of changing the rear brake pads on my s14 and ran into a problem with the left rear caliper. I have the tool for turning the piston in the caliper and have changed the brakes on my s13 many times without any problems. This is the first time changing the pads on this car, and after replacing the pads on the passenger side, I encountered something new when i started on the left side. After spinning the piston clockwise to try and get it seated i found that it wasn't going anywhere. The dimples in the piston looked like the last owner did a number on them and the dust boot was all mangled and loose. Does anyone know how i can get the piston to seat back in? If i remove the piston will i have to bleed the system? by the way, i turned the piston about a quarter turn counter clockwise to see if it would move at all and it did move out a bit.

thanks.95 240sx s14 rear brake caliper piston problem?push and turn

How to change the brake pads on a zx6r kawasaki 1999 (front and rear)?

is it a easy job to do?How to change the brake pads on a zx6r kawasaki 1999 (front and rear)? It takes about 15 minutes.

In the front (on each brake) there are 2 pad spring bolts. You remove them and the pad spring, then pull out the clip and remove the pad pin.

When you put the new pads in, you need to push the caliper pistons in by hand as far as you can, install the new pads and replace the pad pin, clip, pad spring and bolts. Make sure the clip is to the outside of the pad.

The back brakes you must remove the caliper by unscrewing the mounting bolts. Take the caliper off the disc, remove the clip and pad pin, then take out the old pads.

To install new pads, push the piston in and reverse the above procedure.

You should get a service manual as the illustrations are just as helpful as the text. You can probably find a used one on ebay or at http://www.alibris.com or http://www.biblio.com for cheap. How to change the brake pads on a zx6r kawasaki 1999 (front and rear)?it's easy....all u need is the service manual and the right tools. it'll walk u thru it step by step. is cheaper to get the manual than to pay for the shop time. How to change the brake pads on a zx6r kawasaki 1999 (front and rear)?Remove the 2 bolts holding each caliper on. Push in on the old pads to move the pistons all the way in. DO NOT PULL THE BRAKE LEVERS WHILE CALIPERS ARE OFF! Remove the 2 screws that hold the anti-vibe springs on top of the calipers. Pull the cotter pin on the pin that runs through the top of the pads. Pads should fall out. Install new pads and all components in reverse steps. Install calipers...do not touch rotors or pads with your fingers...oil from fingers causes squealing brakes. Pump levers to seat pads to rotors and check fluid levels. Good Luck! How to change the brake pads on a zx6r kawasaki 1999 (front and rear)?Yes it is an easy job if you have the skills and tool to do it

    BUT

As you have to ask how on here and this is your brakes we are talking about I doubt if you do possess the necessary skills and tools to do this and I mean no offence but safety is paramount.

Local bike shop would not charge a fortune to do this and you would be happy in the knowledge that it was done properly.

You need to put safety up there at the top and keep safe

If not, just tell me how. A hint: only do ONE side at a time. That way, if you get mixed up as to how something goes in you can compare it with the side that is still together.

As a general rule, it is a lot easier to replace disc brake pads than to replace drum brake shoes. It sounds like you have disc brakes in the rear - that is good, it will be easier for the home mechanic.Honda Prelude 1999 Brake Pads?I would just take it to a professional and not risk installing them incorrectly and causing a bad accident.

    Changing brake pads?

I am in the middle of changing the rear brake pads on my 98 Grand Prix. I've never done this before but viewed an online how to video. I can't get the caliper off. I've taken off the bolts just fine so it should now be free. I can move it an inch each way around the rotor. But just not out and off the rotor. I can't see inside very well. Does the little metal clamp that squeaks when your pads get thin need to be removed first? There is quite a bit of rust on the edge of the rotors. Can I just hit the caliper lightly with a rubber mallet?Changing brake pads?if you have the pins out and can move it just hit it with a hammer and knock it the rest of the way.. but let me ask did you try pushing back the pinton with a big screwdriver first ... and you can use a real hammer you can beat the crap out of them things.... if yo ucan move it some i bet if you was to pry it back some with a screwdrive it would fall offChanging brake pads? You might try releasing your emergency brakes and then trying to remove the calipers.

Yes you can tap on your calipers. Just strike them on the ends aways from any bolt holes or anything else fragile.Changing brake pads?Try taking the cap off the brake fluid reservoir to allow the pads to spread further but make sure you surround it with rags in case it overflows. Buy some brake fluid in case you need to replace some. Double check to make sure there is not a pin or bolt you missed. Autozone.com has online repair guides for free if you register. No you should not have to remove the squeaker but it might help to bend it out of the way or remove it. Yes it is OK to use rubber mallet but you should not have to.Changing brake pads?Heres what's going on:

The brake pads wear away, and also wear the rotor away. As the rotor gets thinner the caliper pushes more and more in. Sometimes if you let the brakes go too long it also starts to wear grooves into the pads and rotors. These parts all wear together in a pattern. you need to get the caliper to open up some more. You can use all kinds of things to do this. You can use a sturdy flathead screw driver to pry between the caliper piston and the back of the brake pad that touches the piston, you can use a %26quot;c%26quot; clamp. All kinds of ways. But you need to get that caliper to open up. YOu need to get that caliper piston to go in a little so that you can get the assembly to come off...its hanging on by the pattern its worn into the pads/rotor. Like the dude said, you can take off the resevoir cap, make sure your emergency brake is off, etc.

First you need to assess if you have warped rotors. If while breaking the vehicle surges under the pressure of the standard breaking not hard breaking then you have a warped rotor. You have to either remove them and take them to a local shop and have them turned or replace them all together. If you have one warped rotor it is best to have them both turned as pinpointing which one is warped is next to impossible.

Buy a Break Piston Compressor from your local Automobile Shop. Provided a link on what it looks like. While you are there buy the pads. You will want to get the premium or ceramic pads as they will last longer.

Now be prepared to get dirty.

Let the vehicle set for one hour if you just came back from the shop to have the breaks cooled down properly.

Open the hood and loosen the cap for the break reservoir. Do not add more fluid at this time. While performing this break replacement break fluid may spill out so loosely wrapping a rag around the break reservoir will catch most of it. DO NOT REUSE THE FLUID YOU CATCH AND PUT BACK IN THE SYSTEM.

Jack up the vehicle and place a jack stand under the control arm. That is for safety in case the jack fails.

Remove the tire and set aside.

Locate the caliper with the break pads in place.

Open the box that has the new pads. Examine the pads to make sure that you purchased the correct pads by comparing them while they are still on the vehicle. Pads have a metal side and a rough material side to them. After verifying that everything looks the same remove the two bolts that are on the back of the caliper. They are not the large 15/16 bolts they are probably 10mm or 12mm bolts.

Once they are removed, remove the caliper by sliding it forward from the top to the front of the vehicle and lift up. You can set the caliper on top of the rotor while working. DO NOT REMOVE THE BREAK LINE AS DOING SO WILL REQUIRE YOU TO HAVE TO BLEED THE SYSTEM.

Remove the outer pad make note of how you take it out and how it was positioned in the caliper. You may need a screwdriver to help release the clips from the caliper. Do not bend them.

Now leaving the inner pad in place use the piston compression tool and push the piston further into its cylinder. Make sure that you place the tool in the center of the piston and apply Even pressure until it bottoms out. You will know that because you cannot turn it anymore. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.

Open the box that contains the new pads. Locate the Inner pad and remove the inner pad from the caliper and replace it with the new one. Now put the outer pad in place. Return the caliper to its correct position back on the the rotor assembly and insert and replace the bolts. They should be torqued to 10 to 15 ft pounds no more. All vehicles are different so you may want to ask for the torque specifications on your model from the local repair shop.

Replace the tire and perform that same steps on the other side.

After you are finished make sure to tighten the cap for the Break reservoir and close the hood. Start the vehicle and slowly pump the breaks till they feel normal. Test drive it a short distance going slow. No more than 15 mph and test the breaks again. Works great.

How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?

    of the rear brakes

also, in order to resurface the brake routers, is changing the brake pads necessary?

car is VWHow much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?First, check and see if this VW has four-wheel disc brakes. If it's like most vehicles, the rear brakes are drum, and there are no rotors (not 'router'), or brake pads, instead there are brake shoes.

I just had new rotors put on the front of my 1996 Ford Explorer. I have my work done at Midas, been going there for years and the shop manager takes good care of us and our vehicles. A new rotor is $90 and the cost of installing it plus the new pads (new pads are always free after the first Midas brake job) and adjusting the calipers was $55. Resurfacing a rotor might cost half as much as replacing it, but sometimes they are too corroded to have much material left after resurfacing and it's wasted money.

As it was explained to me, pad wear mirrors rotor wear. If you resurface or replace a rotor, new pads are generally a good idea.

Drum work is a little different, and cheaper, than disc. Check and see if you have rear drum brakes, and if you do, I bet you can get new shoes put on for less than $100.

If you've got disc all the way around and it's a VW (import parts are usually more than US), I wouldn't be surprised to see a complete job with new rotors and pads plus installation set you back $800.How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?changing the pads is extemly important. you will ruin the rotors if you dont replace them plus they are very cheap. also in my past experiences it is just as cheap to replace the rotors then turn them plus you dont have to worry about warpage and a warranty comes with the new one the turned ones get no warranty.at auto zone the prices range up and down but for a 1996 vw jetta with a 6 cyl the rotors that are the cheapes with a 2 year warranty are 18.99 and the pads are the cheapest ones with a limmited lifetime warranty and they are 24.99 so it is very cheap these are general prices for front pads and rotors. if you supplied info on your car like make modle and year i coulda gave more accurate prices.i did all four brakes on my jeep myself for around 150.00 and this is with all new parts and it is very easy if you need help grab a haynes repair manual at auto zone, there like 12.00 and explain it in great detail. How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?Yes you need new pads. If you don't replace these, then you just threw a bunch of money away.

Ball park, a good price would be about 80 US dollars an axle to get the brakes done. Provided the mechanic does not find something else wrong. This would be a %26quot;Promotional Price%26quot;, you know, a Midas special.

A reputable shop will be more, because they don't have to give promotional prices to get customers to bring cars in for service. Some shops are so good they don't try to sell you a part like a caliper that you do not need. Hope you can find one of these. The job estimate is always right or less.

While %26quot;Promotional Priced%26quot; repairs very seldom get out the door for less and most likely they will cost a lot more before it is over. How much does it cost to resurface the brake router and change brake pads?do no resurface you brake router. leave your brake router alone. and since it is a vw im going to recommend trading it in for something that isnt a complete pile of sh*t

How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?

    I have a 1999 Acura Integra.

I went to the shop and had the following done:

new brake fluid, changed air filter, front brake pads, rear brake pads, front rotors.

It was 185 parts+ 160 labor came out to be a total of $361.

Do you think it was a fair price? How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?THats fair for not doing it urself...If it was my car, it would of cost me 160, i do all that myself :)

But to do it yourself would require about 200 to 400 in tools and safety equipment. This pays for itself after a few years. How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?thats cheaper than dirt/in nj front pads are 125.cramic/discs are 60 ea and the rear pads are 115/plus fluid and 160 labor and 750 for air filterHow much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?Although the labor cost always kills ya, the cost of the parts you got sounds fair. Rotors can cost $50 each or more, pads are usually $20 or more and theres almost all of your cost and you still have the filter ($5) and fluid to account for. You could always go to www.autozone.com and put in your car make and model and then find the cost of the parts there. How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?Seems fair if the work is quality. Dirty job too.How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors? It all depends on what brands/quality parts he got you.

Assuming, he got you brand name parts at the lowest price (better than some cheap ebay brand at same price):

    Front rotor set around $80

    Brakes F and Rear: $100

Total 180 ish so thats a very good price.

For labor. Installing the front rotor and pads on each side takes about 30 minutes for total:

~1 hr on the front rotors/brake pads.

    ~45 minutes for rear pads

~20 minutes for bleeding and changing brake fluid.

    Total labor: about 2hr +

Verdict: Part fee was excellent. Labor fee was fair. You got good deal.

  • Step by step instructions on how to change rear disc brake pads on a 2006 dodge durango slt.?

you have to jack the vehicle up and put it on jack stands or make sure its safe to work on then remove the wheels then remove the calipers, and on these ones in the rear the calipers screw back in so dint try and press them in like you can on front pads, you can use a pair of pliers to do this with or rent a tool from auto zone that will do it,they also sell these tools fairly cheap, then slowly turn the calipers all the way back in,do one side at a time this way you always have a diagram to look at,then when you get in the vehicle slowly mash on the brake pedal to seat the new pads ,don't hit them all at once,so this part very slowly ,you,ll need a good set of metric wrenches and sockets to use on this one,the main thing is take your time with it nothing should go wrong if you don't get in a hurry be sure and replace any anti rattle springs that might be bad or need replacing, its not hard job but replace anything that looks worn out as you do this,i doubt that you will need to replace anything but the pads on this one, good luck.

How easy is it to change the pads on a rear drum brake in a 1995 BMW E36 Compact?

My passenger side rear drum brake has recently started grinding which I assume is it telling me the pads are worn. I am considering attempting to change the pads myself and wanted to know the complexity of the task, before I continue or pay a mechanic (over the odds) for the work.

How come I can change the front brake pads but not the rear on my car?

Is there i different method that is applied to the rear brakes? How come I can change the front brake pads but not the rear on my car?Alot of rear caliper pistons need to be %26quot;turned%26quot; and %26quot;pushed%26quot; in. This can be a very tricky ordeal. Alot of the time they will just turn and turn and turn. How come I can change the front brake pads but not the rear on my car?the rear brakes are also the parking brake. Sometimes the caliper piston will have slot on the end of it for a tool to turn the piston as it is pressed in. Heres a quick guide link...

    - Good Luck!I nedd to know how to change the rear brake pads on my 1996 chevy corsica?well if i remember correctly, there are no brake pads on the rear of a corsica, it has drum brakes in the back...

    therefore it has brake shoes...I nedd to know how to change the rear brake pads on my 1996 chevy corsica?yeah if it has brake shoes then its gonna be kinda hard if you dont know what to do and how to do it cause its got a bunch of springs that have some tension and if you take it apart and dont know exactly how to put it back together then your gonna spend all night trying to fix it. if its pads then just take off one of the bolts that holds the caliper on and swing the caliper out of the way and compress the piston with a clamp and then install everything back. good luck best thing i could tell you is to get a book on your car from autozone and read up on it. the book gives you a step by step breakdown.I nedd to know how to change the rear brake pads on my 1996 chevy corsica?At many auto parts stores you can buy a Haynes or Chilton's do-it-yourself manual for your model car, with step-by-step instructions, and basic explanations at the beginning of each chapter. If it is not in stock, you can order it online by searching on %26quot;auto repair manuals%26quot; on Yahoo search. In the front is a section on %26quot;Troubleshooting%26quot; that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car's symptoms. Whether you do the work yourself or not, it helps you make informed decisions and not be taken advantage of, and to not feel so %26quot;in the dark.%26quot;

db667089 says: you can check http://www.alldatadiy.com. For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory manual, downloadable (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

Also, many people recommend autozone.com's free online manuals.

my car is a old audi a4 year 1997, If you know it would be helpful , and pictures if you got step by step. How to change rear brake pads on audi a4 -%26gt; P reg.?Many Audi's have rear brakes that require a special tool to %26quot;screw in%26quot; the brake piston. This is so that the parking brake will set. You will have to ask around as to where you can acquire this tool. Sometimes, you can get away with using a large adjustable channel lock wrench. Screw the piston in until it bottoms out. Then, replace the pads. (Axxis pads are very good). WHen you have done both sides, pump the brakes several times to reset the pistons. Voila!!How to change rear brake pads on audi a4 -%26gt; P reg.?As above, but you don't need any special tools: A large screwdriver or long nosed pliers is all that's necessary.

There is a bolt like part on the back of the caliper that needs to be taken out to gain access to the retractor screw. When it is taken out, put the allen wrench in and retract it. After mounting the caliper back up, adjust the caliper and pads for a slight drag. How do i change the rear brake pads on a mazda 626 1999?You can purchase a special tool to compress it or I've used an adjustable clamp but be careful you want the pressure to push directly into the pistons dead centre and you can damage or or chip the piston so be quite careful.

Sometimes I've disconnected the brake line so then the piston goes down with ease and all that needs is to bleed the system fully after wards.

if you have not yet done so, investing in a haynes or clinton's manual for your specific car is a great investment. most auto parts stores carry them or you can search the internet under chiltons or haynes repair manual and the make/model of your car.

for drum brakes, chuck front wheels, loosen lug nuts both side, and jack up car. remove wheel.

the drum will have 2 machine screws holding the drum in place, remove them.

the drum should come off with a little tapping. make sure e brake is off.

you will see two shoes connected by springs and the brake cylinders. also the ebrake arrangement will be apparent.

see why the manual is handy now?

using screwdriver and pliers, dislodge the brake shoes from the cylinder to relief spring tension.

unhook the springs and remove shoes.

depending on the age of the vehicle, it may be a good time to consider replacing the cylinders.

replacement is the opposite of the above.

if the system is disc, same as above for removing the wheel.

the disc calipher will be held on to the car by a couple of bolts. remove to free calipher.

the pads can now be removed.

be sure to have either the drums or the disc resurfaced prior to re-assembly.

it is relatively easy to change either, doable for a shade tree mechanic with a manual.

How many more miles until I need to change rear brake pads if they 4 mm of life left?

Honda dealership tells me my rear pads will need attention soon which I later found out is common with this model. Front pads still have 8mm. They just didnt specify how soon? One month? Next oil change? I only have 22,000 miles on this car and yes I think it is a bit premature to be repacing rear pads especially before the front but I want to make sure I dont wait too long and then have them tell me I need new rotors too!!!!!How many more miles until I need to change rear brake pads if they 4 mm of life left?Hard to say without knowing how much you drive a day or what your braking habbits are...

Hold on a minute, let me get out my magic ball. How many more miles until I need to change rear brake pads if they 4 mm of life left?Honestly your under the %26quot;limits%26quot; and need to just replace both now. it may seem stupid, but honestly it needs to be done before you warp the rotor or ruin the surface.

you do know that your front brakes do 90% of the braking while the rear only does 10% correct? if it was true 50/50 the rear brakes would lock up everytime you hit the brakes. on older cars that have disfunctional brake proportioning valves, the rear tires will lock up when you hit the brakes hard.

Just replace em before it ends up costing you more. and just a tip, if you turn the rotor while your there, the brake pads will last longer. just make sure the rotor is not at its minimal thickness. the people at autozone/napa will have a micrometer to measure the thickness to verify if it can be turned or not.How many more miles until I need to change rear brake pads if they 4 mm of life left?22,000 miles is pretty early to be replacing brakes, but it really depends on your driving habits. We just did the brakes on my wife's car at 65,000 and it was just the front pads. There is no way to tell how long yours will last. An additional tip....take it to a good local brake shop for an inspection and a second opinion. I would not suggest going to Autozone or any similar parts store. The staff there are low paid people who know little about cars. All they know is how to sell parts. How many more miles until I need to change rear brake pads if they 4 mm of life left?Honda considers 2 mm the time to replace brake pads. As for how many miles you have left, it depends on driving habits (like the others said), and how much city vs. highway driving, etc. You're OK for now but keep an eye on them.

There will be a couple indentations on the face of the piston. Put the tips of a decent sized needle nosed pliers in each side, as opposed to grabbing the outside which might scratch it. They do make a special tool that I have, but I don't usually even bother using it.

When you get it back in all the way, make sure that the knob on the back of the brake pad fits into one of the indentations in the piston, or it won't work right. However, as far as I know, you can either push a caliper piston in with a C clamp, or it has to be turned with a special type of tool. For example, Ford application calipers.
